Each Preceptory recommends two Knights to serve on the Bodyguard.
Having been recommended does not necessarily indicate acceptance, either by the Provincial Prior or their willingness to undertake the duties required of them.
Names will be considered by the Provincial Executive, consideration will be given to:
Attendance - at their own Preceptory meetings as well as at all
Provincial functions.
Deportment - smartness is an essential requirement.
Uniform - tidy and clean - preferably having a set of Malta regalia.
Drill - correct sword drill as laid down in the ritual, as well as accepting
the commands of the Commander or his deputies.
In the light of all these recommendations the final decision rests with the Provincial Prior who will contact individually each knight so recommended to ascertain his willingness to fulfil the duties now required of the Bodyguard.
The principal requirements are that each member of the Bodyguard be available for:
1. the two Provincial meetings
2. the Cathedral service
3. at least one team visit
4. acting as escorts on official visits with the Provincial Prior and / or Sub Prior.
Currently the Province has been split into three zones with four Preceptories in each to minimise the number of visits now falling to members of the bodyguard.
A. Hereward the Wake stationed at March, Lynn Regis stationed at King's Lynn, Cabbell stationed at Norwich, Royal Plantagenet stationed at Yarmouth and Beeston Regis stationed at Sheringham under Em. Kt. Ian Dupont
B. Dunwich stationed at Southwold, Prudence stationed at Ipswich, Martyn stationed at Sudbury, St. John stationed at Diss, and Isle of Ely stationed at Ely under Kt. Brian Ffrench
C. Walter Short stationed at Thetford, Walsingham stationed at Fakenham, Tancred stationed at Bury St. Edmunds and Holy Rood stationed at Cambridge under Em. Kt. John Rowell.
Meaning possibly four / five more meetings on top of the original requirement.
These are the minimum visits, should any member of the Bodyguard wish to attend more than asked, they are more than welcome to do so and will be equally warmly welcomed.
The Bodyguard are hand-picked volunteers willing and able to undertake all the duties required of them.
They are an “elite” body and may enjoy certain privileges not available to other knights of the Province and may even on some occasions be considered ambassadors of the Province of East Anglia.
The continuing objective is to enable the Bodyguard to visit Preceptories they would not normally attend, go to places they would not normally go, meet members of other Preceptories and widening their circle of friends.
